Scary sorority sh*t

If you’ve heard of Black Xmas, that despicably bloody festive slasher that the guys behind Final Destination pumped out in ’06, prick those ears up now. It’s a tale of horror I present to you on this chilly December eve, beginning in 1974 when a man named Bob Clark picked up a camera and decided to film something creepy as hell. And no, I’m not talking about those “out there” Charlies Angels-inspired ’70s hair ‘dos. Starring Margot Kidder, Olivia Hussey and Marian Waldman (as the tremendous alcohol-dependant Mrs Mac), this little Christmas treat is a rare gem of a stalk-n-slash flick, replete with zany flower-encumbered wallpaper and hippy-trippy fashion. And heck, what film can boast inspiring just about every aspect of John Carpenter’s much-lauded Halloween, from the unsettling POV killer shots to the slow-burn tension? With its anonymous killer singing proverbs to his freshly dead victims, this is a materclass in under-the-skin tension.

“Suck on my juicy c*ck,” hisses the sorority’s phone-calling menace. “Why don’t you go find a wall socket and stick your tongue in it, that’ll give you a charge,” returns Kidder’s ball-busting Barbie, mere minutes before her innocent cat-loving sorority sister breathes plastic to deadly ends. Fantastically frightening stuff. Watch at your own peril.
